Wiggling ears prompt lifelong love of reading at Concordia

Friday 20 June

Every Friday Concordia Junior College students line up eager to read alongside Harry, a charming cocker spaniel. “I know he is listening when I read because he sniffs the book and wiggles his ears,” said Year 2 student Logan, who reads with Harry every week. Concordia Lutheran College’s partnership with the charity Story Dogs is building confidence in young readers and a love of books across all its primary students.

For some young readers, literacy can be a daunting task, but with Harry by their side as students read aloud has spurred a new enthusiasm for books.

Michelle Daly, Harry's owner, started her involvement with the Story Dogs charity due to her passion for both children and reading.

"I started working at Concordia with the Story Dogs last year because Harry loves children, and I wanted to share him with them. Watching the kids’ confidence and enjoyment grow is wonderful," she said.

At Concordia's Warwick Street Campus, four students each week gain from this unique experience with Harry's presence creating a calm and supportive environment that eases the pressures often associated with learning to read.

The goal of Story Dogs is not only about reading well, but also about making reading a happy, accessible experience for every child. By providing non-judgmental, loving support, dogs like Harry help children engage more fully, building their reading skills alongside a loved canine companion.

“Harry's wagging tail and floppy ears are a powerful motivator. They just love him, and he loves them back,” Michelle said.

"Our collaboration with Story Dogs demonstrates the incredible things that happen when community members come together with one heart and one goal supporting our children," said Concordia’s Head of College, Anton Prinsloo.
