Head of College Update

As we move out of the COVID-19 lockdown stages, it is important to continue to be mindful of the governmental support being provided for school communities, and in particular young people across the Nation.

Spark their future
The Youth Engagement team in the Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET) has developed online resources. The two websites are standalone and based on clear research evidence.

Some of the content themes on the We the Differents site for young people include: ‘find your different’, ‘do education your way’, ‘make it possible with education/training’ and ‘you don’t have to do this alone’. The Spark their Future site for parents and guardians aims to provide online support and advice to support students who are disengaging. Most of the content is relevant to all parents, regardless of school, sector or setting they attend. There are some aspects where the website refers broadly to state schooling policy parameters, but these are limited. The sites are as follows:

Project Based Learning at Concordia

Junior College

From the Directors

It has been another busy week across the Junior College and all students have now settled right back in to face to face learning. It seems hard to believe, but the holidays are fast approaching. As we are nearing the end of Semester 1, teachers are in the midst of Assessment and Reporting and it is timely to note some changes to our reporting for this semester.

Pyjama Day - Friday 12 June

The members on the student council at Warwick Street Campus have decided to have a Pyjama Day next Friday 12 June to raise money for the homeless in Queensland. In order to wear their pyjamas, dressing gowns, slippers or ugg boots, students will need to give either a gold coin donation or donate non-perishable food items. Gifts for the homeless would also be welcome, and these could include blankets, gloves, scarves and beanies.

Homelessness is a big issue in society and it will be wonderful for the Warwick Street Campus students to play their part in supporting this very worthy cause. Don’t forget to bring your joggers if your class has any sport activities next Friday!

News from the Director of Campus

This week we have seen our Captains, in collaboration with Mrs Jana Anderson and Mr Patrick Rudd, launch the Stephen Street Campus Commit to Be Fit initiative. Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.30pm will now be a time where students and staff can meet on the AFL Oval for some fun fitness activities. This will continue for at least the remainder of this term with the view of allowing it to continue into next term if students and staff are engaging with it. I have locked it in my calendar and look forward to joining in from next week.

The other sporting initiative that is under development in preparation for commencement in Term 3 is the Athlete Development Program. The focus of this program will be movement potential, sport performance and injury prevention and awareness. Due to the nature of this program, students will be required to apply for a place in the program based on their current sporting/athletic pursuits and future goals. Keep an eye out to watch this program grow.

On the other cocurricular front, we have the majority of our ensembles and bands back up and running with private music lessons also underway. It is a great time for students who may be wanting to be involved in one of these ensembles, choirs or to learn a musical instrument, to touch base with Mr Paul Edwards to find out more information and to make arrangements to join in.

Year 10 SET Planning
This week, I have had the opportunity to meet with the Year 10 students and their families to discuss their transition into Senior College. The SET Planning process is an educational requirement in all Australian schools and provides a dedicated time for Year 10 students to discuss their career goals, future pathways and Senior College subject selections with their family and a school representative. It is important for all students to have a support network during their senior schooling.

Thank you to all the Year 10 students and their families for taking some time from their busy week to engage in this process.

Date Claimer: Virtual Futures Expo – going live Monday 15 June 5pm
From 15 June, the Virtual Futures Expo will go live through MS Teams. All students from Years 9 to 12 will be added to the Team closer to the date.

At the Virtual Expo, students will be able to visit virtual booths of universities, training organisations and other providers to access important information, websites, videos and various other content.

Commit to be Fit

We understand that with the current restrictions, students are missing their friends and the sense of connection they receive through sport which has such a crucial role to play in promoting wellbeing. This has never been more apparent than it is now.

Concordia Sport is passionate about sport and the power it has to unite students. We are looking for Commit to be Fit to inspire students and staff to get active. The challenges will also help students and staff to capture the enjoyment, competition and camaraderie they have been missing out on during weeks of school closures and social distancing.

Join us each Wednesday afternoon in Term 2 from 3.30pm on the AFL oval.
